Experts Emphasise the Need for National Policy on Integrative Medicine

Experts in the field of medicine, Ayurveda practitioners, Allopathic doctors and modern scientists gathered together for the Amrita Samyogam event held at Amrita Institute of Medical Sciences, Kochi. All these experts emphasised the need to integrate Ayurveda and allopathic medicine to come up with better health solutions.
The two-day event was attended by more than 60 experts and 1,000 delegates from different parts of the world. The experts added that a national policy must be formed by the government for the integration of the two fields of medicine.
The aim of these integrated health solutions is to make India the global leader in the field of integrated medicine and provide solutions for auto-immune diseases like arthritis, management of cancer, diabetes, mental health and neuro-degenerative diseases.
Dr. Rajesh Kotecha, Special Secretary, Ministry of AYUSH inaugurated the conference. Kotecha spoke on the occasion and said that the government is very serious about the promoting integrated health solutions and encourages migration of knowledge.

He also added that the government is constructing a nationwide AYUSH grid that will connect all hospitals and research labs. This will help in recording all case histories and observations that will serve as evidence for the efficacy of Ayurveda, he added.
Research Director at the Amrita Centre for Advanced Research in Ayurveda, Dr. P Ram Manohar, said that an integrated system will also help people to figure out the type of medicine that is more effective for them. He added that supervised trials and guidelines need to be laid down for practising integrated medicine.

Experts also added that integrated medical solutions might help to find solutions for diseases such as diabetes, neurodegenerative diseases, arthritis, cardiovascular diseases, etc., in which allopathic does not promise a cure. It was also added that Ayurveda can help cover the side-effects that are caused by allopathic medicine.
