Over 858 B.Tech seats were lying vacant this year in IITs across the country. To fill up the seats, the premier institutes decided to release the extended merit list for admission.

Earlier this year, IIT-Kanpur brought down the cutoff score by 10 percentage points to increase the pool of qualifying candidates. The extended merit list of IITs had around 13,850 students, out of which 8,691 were general students, 3,285 OBC, 771 SC and 293 ST, candidates. Out of 13,850 candidates, 858 students managed to secure admission in different UG programmes across 23 IITs in the country.

It is for the very first time that IITs decided to revise the cut-off marks after the results were declared. The decision to release the extended merit list was taken because the first merit list did not have enough candidates to fill all the seats.

Out of 858 total students who got admission after the extended list, 156 are from General category, 658 Other Backward Classes and 34 are Scheduled Tribe category students.

The Joint Admission Board of the IITs requested the anonymity for 200 seats and over 858 seats would have been left-unoccupied if the IITs did not revise the aggregate cut-off score.

Meanwhile, the court allowed the board to convert the OBC seats into a general category. This year seven rounds of counselling took place and only 120 seats were unoccupied in IIT BHU with 41 seats followed by IIT Dhanbad with 24 vacant seats.
