Union HRD Minister, Mr. Prakash Javadekar revealed that the government would soon file a review petition in Supreme Court of India with regard to faculty reservation mechanism in universities. The move comes after the apex court of India rejected the Special Leave Petition on faculty reservation mechanism. Over the last few days, teachers and students bodies of universities have been demanding to restore the earlier mechanism of faculty reservation. Therefore, the government has decided to file a review petition in the Supreme Court in this regard. The government will also bring an ordinance to overturn the verdict of Supreme Court on Faculty Reservation.

Despite the Union Government has been trying to replace the older system of faculty reservation, the UGC has directed all the universities to resume faculty reservation immediately.

In January 2019, the apex court rejected the Special Leave Petition seeking restoration of the earlier mechanism of faculty reservation. The court rejected the plea because the total number of faculty posts in universities was being calculated institution-wise rather than department-wise.

Mr. Prakash Javadekar explained that the government would try its best to bring back the earlier reservation mechanism, and ensured that the reservation for OBC/ SC/ ST will not be hampered.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) directed all the universities to stall the recruitment process until the Supreme Court takes a call on it after filing the review petition.
