FDDI Bill 2017: FDDI Empowered to Award Degrees, Diplomas to Students
- The provisions of FDDI Bill 2017 have come into force on October 16, 2017.
- Four new FDDI campuses in Hyderabad, Banur, Patna and Ankleshwar will be functional from the next academic session.
The Footwear Design and Development Institute (FDDI) has been empowered to award degrees and diplomas to its students. Mr. CR Choudhary (Minister of State for Commerce and Industry) revealed that FDDI had been declared as an ‘Institute of National Importance’. The Parliament of India passed the FDDI Bill in July 2017. The provisions of the FDDI Act 2017 have come into force on October 16, 2017. The status will take the institute to a next level so that it is able to provide better services, he added.

Mr. CR Choudhary indicated that FDDI could design the courses as per the requirements of industry and award degrees to students. FDDI can develop and conduct courses for graduate, postgraduate, doctoral and post-doctoral levels independently. The premier footwear institute can also carry out effective research activities in the areas of leather and footwear products design and development along with allied fields.

Currently, FDDI is offering skill-based postgraduate and graduates courses in the fields of footwear, leather goods, retail and management to over 2,500 students in eight campuses across the country.
All the campuses of FDDI can now enroll an additional 2,500 students in the next academic session. The four new FDDI campuses that will come up in Banur, Ankleshwar, Hyderabad and Patna will be functional from the next year. The government is giving special emphasis to the footwear sector since it is capable of employing over 4.42 million people.
The FDDI Bill 2017 was introduced in Lok Sabha on March 14, 2017. Further, the Lok Sabha approved the Bill on April 6, 2017.
