NITs and IIEST Introduce Tuition Fee Waiver for SC/ST/PH M.Tech Students
SC/ST and Physically Handicapped M.Tech students at the National Institutes of Technology and IIEST Shibpur will now be offered a tuition fee waiver. A decision has been taken at the National Institute of Technology, Science Education and Research (NITSER).
After a meeting between the MHRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’ and officials from different National Institutes of Technology (NITs) in India and the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology, Shibpur (IIEST) a decision has been taken to introduce a fee waiver scheme for the SC/ST and the PH students.
During the meeting for NITSER, which had been attended by different Institute directors and chairpersons of the various Boards of Governors, it was decided that the students from the SC/ST and the physically handicapped category who are enrolled in the M.Tech programmes at NITs and IIEST will be offered a tuition fee waiver scheme, sources state.
Along with the introduction of the tuition fee waiver scheme, the MHRD Minister also directed the NIT officials to carry out a faculty recruitment process. The directive had been given after the issue of lack of faculty in the NITs was raised in the meeting.
The recruitment of the required faculty should be done in a manner that will positively affect the rankings of NITs. An official from the HRD Ministry stated that the National Institutes have been directed to fill nearly 2,200 vacant faculty positions in the institutes. He added that the institutes will have to fill up the vacancies by December this year.

The official from the Ministry of Human Resource Development also said that the Tenure Track System, which has been approved by the Ministry, will be implemented for faculty recruitment as well.

In all, tuition fee waiver, massive faculty recruitment will not only improve the overall performance of the institute but also the rankings.
