In recent times, CM Yogi Adityanath’s Government in the state of Uttar Pradesh has been advocating the popularising of the “language of the God’s”, i.e. Sanskrit. However, the number of students who wish to pursue the language across the state has been diminishing, year after year.

With the party releasing various press statements in Sanskrit, in order to promote the people to pursue studying the language, data shows that the promotion of the language has been a failure. Sources state that more than 40% of the seats for Sanskrit, Hindi as well as other languages have been left vacant.

A Faculty member from the Lucknow University has stated that the students have not been choosing Sanskrit and other languages due to one major reason, which is the courses do not guarantee a career. The faculty particularly stated that the number of students opting for Sanskrit has been reducing over the years. He further added that with the current rate of diminishing number of students, the University will have to let go of courses such as these in the coming future.

A Senior IAS Officer made a statement on the issue saying that if the Government’s intentions are to promote the language among the masses, they should first focus on improving the conditions of the Sanskrit Schools situated in Uttar Pradesh. Sources state that the education department records a total of 1,148 posts of Principals as well as teachers in more than 920 different Sanskrit schools across the state have been left vacant for years. When divided into the two posts, sources state that there are 257 posts for Principals that are vacant, meanwhile, the rest 921 seats are devoid of the assistant teachers, that these schools require in order to function properly.
