The government of India is all set to launch the one-of-its-kind sign language dictionary which will bring in uniformity in the sign languages used by speech and hearing impaired people of the country. It will be called as the Indian Sign Language or the ISL dictionary and is currently being developed and executed by the ISLRTC or Indian Sign Language Research & Training Centre.

According to sources, so far, the dictionary has compiled about 6,032 Hindi as well as English words and its corresponding graphical representations of the signs, mostly comprising of those words that are used in one’s daily life. It will also include regional variations. Various legal, medical and technical terms will also be a part of it. The interesting fact about this is that the dictionary is being developed in a print as well as a video format for easy and quick usage.

This initiative will not only facilitate increased communication between speech and hearing impaired but will also create a database for future policy making agendas, added Thaawarchand Gehlot, the Union Social Justice & Empowerment Minister at the two-day national conference that was titled as ‘Empowering Deaf through Indian Sign Language’.

At present, every region in the country has a varied sign language that adds to the difficulty in the communication process, especially with those in other regions.
