Valson Thampu, the former Principal of St.Stephen's College, raised a new controversy by blaming teachers and holding them responsible for poor NAAC or National Assessment and Accreditation Council rankings for the college. However, the alumni of the college did not agree with the statement of Thampu. They indicated that the statement given by Thampu is misleading and termed it as dishonest.

Thampu slammed teachers regarding poor rankings in 2015 too. He reported that the college had allowed its native strength to weakness.
He termed that the teachers are mediocre and they need to take the responsibility of poor NAAC ratings.

The alumni group stated that the allegations of Thampu are irrelevant and misleading. They further said that he should take some responsibility for the downfall of the institute as he was the principal of St. Stephen's College for 8 long years.

In 2017, St.Stephen's College did not perform well in the NAAC rankings. The institute did not manage to secure at least top 10 positions among the DU-affiliated colleges and secured the 12th place. Acharya Narendra Dev College and Zakir Hussain College are ahead of that St. Stephen's College.

No DU college has managed to secure A++ rating this year. Only three colleges out of 60 affiliated colleges secured A+ rating and other colleges obtained 'A' rating from NAAC.

Every year, there is more competition for admissions in DU colleges and these colleges have failed to achieve better rankings from NAAC. Therefore, it is time for these colleges to improve their performance and achieve a better rating in the next assessment which will be carried out after five years.
