Formulation of New Education Policy will Take Time: HRD Ministry

With an objective to revamp the education system in the country, Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi wanted to formulate the New Education Policy by the end of 2017. Earlier, he directed the HRD Ministry to do the same.

However, Mahendra Nath Pandey, Minister of HRD (State) informed that the formulation of NEP might take more time. Giving response to a written question in Rajya Sabha, Mr. Pandey further indicated that the formulation of NEP is in the process and the finalisation of the same might be delayed. He further explained that the HRD Ministry has plans to constitute a committee to draft National Education Policy after it decided to junk a similar report from T.S.R. Subramanian committee.

T.S.R. Subramanian Committee submitted its report to the government regarding draft NEP in May 2016. The committee suggested various measures need to be taken to improve the education sector currently catering to 300 billion students. This will include reviewing the No Detention Policy until Class V and until the child attains 11 years of age.

On February 4, 2017, the 18th Conference of Association of Indian Principals was held in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu to discuss the draft of New Education Policy that was released by the centre. Later, the proceedings of this conference had been submitted to the Higher Education Department of the state. Around 300 principals from 17 states took part in the conference and expressed their opinion. They also suggested various ways for the development of higher education in the country.
