Four National Institutes of Design (NID) Declared as Institutions of National Importance
The Union Cabinet has given approval for the Institute of National Importance tag for four National Institutes of Design (NID) in Vijayawada, Bhopal, Kurukshetra and Johrat. Read more below.
Cabinet and Railway Minister, Mr. Piyush Goyal announced that four NIDs (National Institutes of Design) will be accorded with the status of Institute of National Importance. For this purpose, the union government is going to make some major amendments in the National Institute of Design Act (2014). National Institute of Design (Amendment) Bill 2019 will be introduced in the Parliament soon. These four NIDs include the following:
- National Institute of Design Vijayawada/ Amaravati in Andhra Pradesh
- National Institute of Design, Kurukshetra in Haryana
- National Institute of Design, Jorhat in Assam
- National Institute of Design, Bhopal in Madhya Pradesh
Furthermore, according to the statement release, these for NIDs will also be declared as Institutes of National Importance at par with the popular NID Ahmedabad (Gujarat).
According to the sources, other amendments such as re-naming NID Vijayawada as NID Amravati and changing the nomenclature of the Principal Designer as equivalent to a Professor have also been proposed in the Bill. The NID Bill was placed in the Parliament by Nirmala Sitharaman who was the then Minister of State for Ministry of Commerce and Industry and the Minister of State for the Finance and Government.
It is believed that setting up National Institutes of Design in different regions of the country will add to producing highly skilled professionals in the field of design will create ample job opportunities in small, medium as well as large-scale enterprises.
It was in July 2014, that the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad was pronounced as an Institute of National Importance by an Act of Parliament with an objective to promote quality education, research as well as training in the field of design. It was also the first Bill that was passed by the then newly elected NDA government.
Since NID Ahmedabad was declared as an Institute of National Importance, it also got the power to bestow degrees to students and also introduce Ph.D. courses.
