Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai popularly known as IIT- B in its annual technology festival- Techfest 2016 has organised free workshops of coding exclusively for women. These workshops have been organised for college students in 20 different cities in India to encourage women to join following fields.

- Technology
- Mathematics

We are living in the 21st century but still only 15 percent of the total number of students in IITs are women. Karan Mehta who is the manager of the techfest said that this workshop will help women learn the basics which are really important in today’s world as 99 percent of the work happens online so having basic coding skills using python will be helpful for women.
Till now 5 workshops has been conducted in following cities in which more than 300 girls participated.

- Pune
- Noida

This initiative is backed by UNICEF and workshops are scheduled to take place in the following cities.
- Chandigarh
- Delhi
- Ahmedabad

A researcher in nanotechnology shared her views with a reporter and said that doing a thorough research takes time which is not really given to girls in this country. If a girl does PhD or postdoctoral studies she will be around 30 years by which time she is pressured for marriage and after that, she is forced to drop out of the industry so to stop that government should come up with some child care infrastructure.
