Union Human Resource Development Minister Smriti Irani made an announcement when she was in Surat to participate in an event to mark the Bharatiya Janata Party's Foundation Day which was "full tuition fee waiver will be given to students who belongs to the backward classes, and those who are physically challenged, at the country's top technology institutes" i.e. at IITs.
A recent government survey listed IIT, Madras as the country's top technology institute, followed by IIT Mumbai and IIT Kharagpur.
Currently, the 23 branches of IITs in the country already have 15%, 7.5% and 27% of seats reserved for SC, ST, and OBC candidates and now there is 100% fee waiver for them too.
Following are the two recommendations given by the Standing Committee of IIT Council (SCIC)
- Threefold hike in the annual fee
- New system for entrance exams which will be conducted by the National Authority of Test (NAT)
The IIT panel last month approved the proposal of three-fold hike in annual fees in IITs and if the other proposal is also approved then the fees of foreign students will be raised from the current annual USD 4000 to USD 10,000. The committee has also recommended that every student will be provided educational loans on an interest-free basis and without collateral under the Vidyalakshmi scheme.
