Gandhi Jayanti is a national holiday in India that serves as a reminder of his timeless teachings and steady commitment to Non-violence and Social Justice. It is not just a mere commemoration but an opportunity to reflect on the ideas and principles of Gandhi (or Bapuji) and to let our students be aware of what Gandhiji stood for. Even today, his emphasis on self-discipline and non-violence holds tremendous significance. On this day, various activities and events are held in schools, colleges, and institutions to pay tribute to this iconic personality.

  • Mahatma Gandhi’s full name was Mohan Das Karamchand Gandhi. He was born on October 2, 1869 in Porbandar, Gujarat.
  • People used to call him Bapuji. He studied law in London and practised as a lawyer in South Africa before he returned to India.
  • Despite being nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize five times, he never received an award.
  • Mahatma Gandhi is known for his philosophy of Satyagraha, which stands for peaceful resistance and the pursuit of truth.
  • In 1930, Bapuji led the famous Dandi March to protest against the British salt monopoly in India.
  • His non-violent resistance movement in South Africa began in 1893 when he opposed unjust laws against the Indian community. 
  • Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated on January 30, 1948, by Nathuram Godse. Hindus were butchered in broad daylight, their women molested, and children slaughtered. It was in the immediate aftermath of such a calamity that Godse killed Gandhi and eventually paid for it with his life.  
  • Gandhi's ashes were divided and sent to various locations in India, some even scattered in rivers and oceans. 
  • He was known for his simple lifestyle, practising vegetarianism and promoting self-sufficiency. 
  • Gandhi was an advocate for women's rights and played a crucial role in empowering women during the independence movement. 
  • He inspired various many global leaders like Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King Jr., and Aung San Suu Kyi, in their struggles for equality and justice.
