One of the professors of Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi was of the opinion that GATE 2017 received few examinees from overseas due to less time to prepare for the examination. The decision to hold GATE 2017 in foreign cities was taken in October 2016. Therefore, students were not confident to take the examination, as they did not get much time to prepare.

Devang Khakhar, Director of Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay revealed that GATE examination was conducted for the first time in foreign cities and many students might have been unaware about the examination. Therefore, more publicity must be done about the examination so that it could draw the attention of more examinees in the coming two to three years.

Additionally, Jawaharlal Nehru University or JNU also conducted entrance examination in Kathmandu and Dhaka. The varsity also grants direct admission to some foreign students as per their academic record. One of the officials of JNU explained that they have more takers for Humanities and Social Sciences.
