Counselling:

Calculation of GATE 2017 Score

  • Calculation of Normalized Marks for CE, CS, EC, EE and ME papers
  1. For GATE 2016, the examination for CE, CS, EC, EE and ME papers is being held in multi-sessions. A suitable normalization is applied for these papers which takes into account any variation in the difficulty levels of the question papers across different sessions.
  2. The fundamental assumption that “in all multi-session GATE papers, the distribution of abilities of candidates is the same across all the sessions” is used for normalization. The same is justified as the number of candidates appearing in multi-session papers in GATE 2016 is large but the procedure of allocation of session to candidates is random. It also ensures that for the same multi-session paper, the number of candidates allotted in each session is of the same order of magnitude.
  3. The below mentioned formula is used for calculating the normalized marks, for CE, CS, EC, EE and ME papers.

Normalized Mark of jth candidate in ith session M^ ij is given by:

M^ij=?gt−Mgq/M?ti−Miq(Mij−Miq)+Mgq where,

Mij: the actual marks obtained by the jth candidate in ith session

M?gt: the average marks of the top 0.1% of the candidates considering all sessions

Mgq: the sum of mean and standard deviation marks of the candidates in the paper considering all sessions

M?ti: the average marks of the top 0.1% of the candidates in the ith session

Miq: the sum of the mean marks and standard deviation of the ith session

Normalized marks based on the above formula will be calculated corresponding to the raw marks obtained by a candidate for CE, CS, EC, EE and ME papers. Actual marks obtained will be used for calculating the GATE 2016 Score for all the other papers.

  • Calculation of GATE Score for all papers

GATE 2016 score will be calculated using the formula;

GATE Score=Sq+(St−Sq)(M−Mq)(M?t−Mq)

In the above formula;

M: marks obtained by the candidate (actual marks for single session papers and normalized marks for multi-session papers)

Mq: the qualifying marks for general category candidate in the paper

M?t: the mean of marks of top 0.1% or top 10 (whichever is larger) of the candidates who appeared in the paper (in case of multi-session papers including all sessions)

Sq= 350, is the score assigned to Mq

St= 900, is the score assigned to M?t

In the formula, Mq is usually 25 marks (out of 100) or μ+σ, whichever is larger for calculating GATE 2016 score. Here μ is the mean and σ is the standard deviation of marks of all the candidates who appeared in the paper.

The GATE Score Cards will be downloadable after the declaration of the results to:

  • All SC/ST/PwD candidates who secured marks greater than or equal to the qualifying mark of SC/ST/PwD candidates in their respective papers, and
  • All other candidates securing marks greater than or equal to the qualifying mark of OBC (NCL) candidates in their respective papers.

Please note that there is no provision for the issue of additional GATE Score Cards.

The authority to decide the qualifying mark/score for each GATE paper lies solely with the GATE 2016 Committee. The jurisdiction for any claim or dispute which may arise with respect to GATE 2016 will be settled in the Courts and Tribunals in Allahabad only.
