Pratap Jyoti Handique Appointed New VC of Gauhati University

The chancellor of Gauhati University, the Governor of Assam, Sri Jagadish Mukhi has appointed Mr. Pratap Jyoti Handique as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Gauhati. Till Mr. Handique becomes 70 years of age or completes 5 years in service, he will continue in his office according to the Gauhati University Act 1947.

A Raj Bhavan release informed that Handique will have to hold office for a period of 5 years or till he is 70 years of age, whichever is earlier as per the Gauhati University Act 1947.

Dr. Handiqe has been working with Gauhati University as a professor of Bio-Technology for a long time. The research publications by him are varied and he has expertise in the botany demographics of north-eastern states. His research publications are as follows:

• In vitro regeneration of a medicinal plant-Houttuynia cordata Thunb. from nodal explants
• High frequency in vitro shoot multiplication of Plumbago indica, a rare medicinal plant
• High multiplication frequency and genetic stability for commercialization of the three varieties of micropropagated tea plants (Camellia spp.)
• Terpenoid compositions and antioxidant activities of two Indian valerian oils from the Khasi Hills of north-east India
• A brief overview of Andrographis paniculata (Burm. f) Nees., a high valued medicinal plant: Boon over synthetic drugs

With the appointment of the new Vice-Chancellor, the Government of Assam hopes that the university will develop and touch new heights, many new reformation policies have been taken for the University of Gauhati in recent times and the university has improved its rankings also. Gauhati University is one of the most eminent universities among the seven sister states of North-Eastern region of India.
