Goa Govt. Scraps Higher Education Financial Assistance Scheme
Goa government discontinued the final assistance scheme provided to financially backward students to pursue higher studies in IITs, IIMs and BITS.
The State government of Goa has taken a decision to discontinue financial assistance scheme offered to students from financially backward families. The scholarship had been offered to help students pursue higher studies in premier institutes such as IITs, IIMs and BITS. The state government, however, did not specify the reasons for the discontinuation of the financial assistance scheme.
Directorate of Higher Education – Goa launched the financial assistance scheme to pursue higher education in the year 2011. As per the scheme, students were provided with a refund of fees paid to the respective institution subject to a maximum of Rs. 1 lakh per annum. Students were provided with a one-time grant of Rs. 50,000 for purchasing a laptop, Rs. 2,000 monthly allowance to cover hostel charges and Rs. 15,000 per annum to cover up stationery and other expenses.

The state government allowed students whose parents' annual income is less than Rs.10 lakh to apply for the scholarship scheme. The selected students were prescribed to get a minimum of 60% marks to continue getting financial aid during the subsequent academic years of the course. Students whose parents' income is less than Rs. 4.5 lakh per annum had been offered financial assistance beyond the first year of studies.

The discontinuation of scholarship scheme might turn out to be a bane for Goa's financially backward students. Every year, numerous students from Goa used to get admission in IITs, IIMs, and BITS.
