Goa to Get Second Medical College After 177 Years

After a gap of 177 years, Goa is all set to get its second medical college. one of the first medical colleges in the Continent, Goa Medical College and Hospital was established when the state was a Portuguese colony, in 1842.

Vishwajit Rane, Health Minister of the state informed that the government is considering a proposal to establish a new medical college at Margao in South District. The proposal to establish a new college in the state is yet to get approval from Chief Minister Pramod Sawant.

The existing Goa Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) which is the only medical college in the state is located Bambolim Panaji North Goa. It was established in 1842. Every year, 150 MBBS students graduate from college. Setting up of new college in the state will help them get more medical seats which mean more doctors. Also, Medical aspirants will not be required to move out of the state once the medical college is established as the number of MBBS seats will increase.

Speaking on the topics further, Rane stated that the ownership status of the new medical college, i.e. whether it will be a Government or Private college, is yet to be decided. However, he also mentioned that the state’s new medical college will run independently of the Goa Medical College and Hospital.

Earlier the third phase of the “Establishment of New Medical Colleges by Upgrading District or referral Hospitals had been put in motion. As per the proposal for the third phase, the plan is to set up a total of 75 medical colleges with district or referral hospitals. This will further add a total of 15,700 seats for the MBBS programme across the country.
