Goa to Hike Education Expenditure to 6% of GDP: Manohar Parrikar

Chief Minister of Goa, Manohar Parrikar revealed that the state government would increase the expenditure on education from existing 3.8 percent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) to 6 percent in the coming five years.

Currently, Goa is spending 3.8% of GDP in the education sector and the target is to touch 6 percent in the next five years. Mr. Manohar Parrikar made this announcement at a meeting that took place in Panaji. Prakash Javadekar, Union HRD Minister was also present at the meet.

Mr. Panikkar also indicated that he always preferred to retain finance and education portfolios with him. He expressed that education is an important portfolio that he wishes to handle and bring in significant changes. The contribution of education towards the total budget is 30 percent.

He further explained that there is more responsibility and burden in the education department. The government has taken various development activities in the education sector that include creating infrastructure for educational institutions. The state government is also planning to create integrated school complexes where the entire educational institutions will be present or accommodated in one place. So far, the government has been successful in accommodating the entire educational institutions at Bambolim.

Mr. Parrikar also revealed that the government is planning to spend Rs. 50-100 crore on creating integrating school complexes. The government will soon set up integrated school complexes in Mapusa and Margao. He explained that it was the demand from people to shift schools out of the city in secure places so that urban areas would be relieved from the traffic woes.
