Google has joined hands with NCERT to launch the digital citizenship programme in India. The main agenda of this collaboration is to generate awareness about internet safety and to mark it as Internet Safer Day 2018. Apart from this, Google has also created a curriculum for teachers through which students can learn about digital citizenship and web safety in the classrooms.

Through the launch of Digital Citizenship Programme, students will learn how to become responsible digital citizens and how important it is to understand the web safety. They will be taught using structured classrooms on the social, legal and ethical aspects of the internet.

Sunita Mohanty Director, Trust and Safety, Google India said that even though internet has made our life simpler for everyone and offers various opportunities, online users have to be aware of the negative experiences and threats that they may experience on the web. According to her, one of the reasons for growing number of negative experiences on the web is due to the unawareness among online users.

About Digital Citizenship Programme by Google & NCERT

Google will provide a range of resources and educators for the programme to teach and prepare students for the online threats. The syllabus for the programme is divided into 4 main sections:

  • Being Safe
  • Being Smart
  • Being a digital citizen
  • Being Future Ready

The syllabus is designed keeping in mind all age groups. As the students advance through their classes they will be taught more advanced topics about web safety such as intellectual property, privacy, device management etc.
