Reputed company Google will not take part in the recruitment process in most of the Indian Institutes of Technology this year. However, Google will recruit students from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi and Bombay.

The move that was taken by Google to bypass the placement process at IITs in Kanpur, Chennai, Guwahati, Kharagpur and elsewhere clearly makes a break with tradition. Usually, Google hires any candidate it finds worthy without the involvement of the schools. However, such off-campus hirings are discouraged by IITs, but they did not have much of an option when it came to Google.

An official of IIT Delhi revealed that it was an internal decision in the company to conduct off-campus placements. However, most of the IITs agreed to this except Delhi and Bombay as they have different processes in place. He further added that IITs are not too keen on hiring directly as it disrupts the process for everyone else and students shall not sail on two boats during placements.

An official of IIT Bombay also clarified that they do not encourage off-campus placements. IIT Placement committees have confirmed that Google had sought to be excluded from the campus placement process. However, the company did not comment on the issue. One of the officials of All IIT Placement Committee (AIPC) revealed that Google has already started approaching students directly and vice versa.

McKinsey initiated the tradition last year by going completely off-campus for its IIT recruitments during final placements. Last year, the company recruited around ten students from IIT Delhi through its alumni network, website and social media.

There is a general perception that the packages offered by Google are high and amount upto Rs. 1-2 crore for foreign postings. The company follows a rigorous procedure while recruiting the candidates. Last year, it hired about 20 candidates from five older IITs, i.e., Madras, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Delhi and Bombay.
