Government Approves IIIT Bill; Institutes Get Provision to Grant Degrees

The IIIT Bill has been approved by the Cabinet on Wednesday, March 15, 2017. According to the Bill, the 15 Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) that were established in public-private partnership mode will get statutory powers.
The Bill is yet to get the approval of the parliament. Once the Bill in brought in implementation, it will empower these institutions to award degrees to their students.

According to the press note released by the Cabinet Secretariat, these 15 institutes will be entitled to use the nomenclature of Bachelor of Technology (B.Tech), Master of Technology (M.Tech) or Ph.D. degree on the same lines as issued by a University or any Institution of National Importance.
Talking about the details of the Bill, an HRD Ministry official said that the Bill provides a detailed governance structure of the institutes. It also comprises of details regarding the appointments to important posts such as Chairman of the Board of Governors, director, etc., added the official.
The Bill also proposes to establish a combined forum to coordinate activities conducted at all 15 IIITs. The ministry official also informed that new IIITs will also be established across the country under the PPP mode.

Currently, there are 15 fully functional IIITs in India. The funding and governance cost of these institutes is provided by the central government, state government and industry in the ratio 50:35:15. These institutes have are counted among the educational centers of national importance for their quality of education and industrial interaction.
