Government Medical Colleges in Tamil Nadu to Offer PG Courses from 2020

As per the order of MCI (Medical Council of India), all Government Medical Colleges in Tamil Nadu would start offering PG (post Graduate) medical courses from the academic session 2020-21. Directorate of Medical Education – Tamil Nadu has confirmed that it would choose PG medical courses and specialities that should be offered in government medical colleges across the state. The selection of PG medical courses will be based on the government’s requirements, job opportunities, and community needs.

At present, Directorate of Medical Education is working on preparing a list of specialities that need more doctors along with the names of districts where the requirement of doctors for such specialities is required.

Director of Medical Education – Tamil Nadu, Dr. Edwin revealed that there is a huge demand for nephrologists in various districts and medical college hospitals across the state. Today, more people are suffering from chronic and acute renal failure, and the requirement for nephrologists has been increasing. On the other hand, there is a greater demand for cardiac surgeons in government hospitals. However, more students do not show much interest in cardiac surgery despite high demand. The government will take enough steps to encourage students to take up cardiac surgery, he added.

According to sources, 15 out of 22 government medical colleges in Tamil Nadu are expected to offer 1,250 seats in PG medical courses. The state government will surrender a required number of seats to all-India quota. More PG seats are expected to be added in Kanyakumari Medical College, as the MCI inspection is underway.
