Government Sets Up Panel to Explore Conversion of Port Hospitals into Medical Colleges
The committee consists of 13 members which include doctors and elected representatives.
The Central Government has set up a panel to study whether the hospitals which are spread across the coastline can be modernised and developed into medical colleges. The primary objective for taking up this initiative is to ensure better services to patients by creating more doctors.

The committee has been established by the Union Ministry of Shipping under Mr. Vedprakash Mishra, Chancellor of Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences to study the hospitals which are present across the coasts, and to further suggest probable measures for the modernisation of these hospitals into medical colleges on a Private-Public Partnership basis. The committee consists of 13 members which include doctors and elected representatives.

Mr. Mishra is also the Chairman of Academic Sub-Committee of Medical Council of India (MCI). He said that 13 port trust hospitals had been identified which include those in regions such as Kolkata, Chennai, Vishakapatnam, Kochi, Tuticorin and Mumbai. All these hospitals have a total number of 200 beds.
The committee will study the possibility to upgrade these hospitals into medical colleges which can be used for both academic and service purpose.
