Most of the colleges or institutes in India are experiencing a shortage of teachers and the authorities said that it is only because of the strict guidelines or eligibility criteria for teachers. Now the government has decided to repose the minimum salary guidelines to tackle the shortage of teachers. This decision has been taken as even institutes like Indian Institutes of Technology are experiencing the scarcity. This change will attract more foreign teachers.

Currently, the visa for work is only given to those teachers who will be given minimum $25,000 or more per annum. But now the minimum salary of $15,000 has been set by the Home Ministry. The earlier rule of $25,000 was made because the government wanted to give preference to the Indians so the unemployment percentage does not go high. IITs were allowed to hire foreign teachers but only on five-year contract basis. The institutes couldn’t achieve the desired faculty strength as they couldn’t afford to pay over Rs. 1,00,000 per month for mid-level teachers.

The changes in the guidelines will help the institutes and students of India immensely. The updated rules have not been approved by the cabinet yet. The Human Resources Development Ministry is in the favour of the updated rules. So the HRD Ministry’s favour might help speed up the process.
