GSHSEB: Mathematics on Offer to Non-Science Students

The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) has decided to follow the steps of the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) and have announced that the students belonging to the Non-Science stream in the senior secondary classes will be offered the choice to choose Mathematics as one of the subjects.

The Executive Committee of the state board had been suggesting the change for some time now and after various discussions were made on the topic, the change will be brought in from this academic year. The state government has also agreed to bring in the change to the curriculum of the General Courses, i.e. Commerce and Arts Courses. Apart from the demand of the executive committee, the demand was also raised by students and parents alike grant the students from the non-science background to take up Mathematics.

The Principal Secretary of Higher and Technical Education, Anju Sharma has confirmed that they will be going ahead with allowing the non-science students to take up Mathematics. She stated to sources that they had taken CBSE as an example, and decided to follow in their footsteps and decided to not restrict the students from opting for the subject in Classes 11 and 12.

Sources state that there had been a high demand from the students from the stream of Commerce, who have to study Accountancy. To promote the change, the state board has already infused the curriculum of NCERT (National Council of Education Research and Training) for the Classes of 11 and 12.

GSHSEB Chairman, A J Shah stated that after the recommendations of the state board, a framework of the curriculum was outlined, which then was worked on in detail by the Gujarat State School Textbook Board’s Curriculum Committee.
