Gujarat HC: Biotechnology Degree Holders Can Apply for Science Teacher Post
The Gujarat High court has held that a candidate with a degree in Biotechnology can apply for Maths and Science teachers in the State. Earlier they were considered ineligible to apply for the post.
The Gujarat High court has held that a candidate with a degree in Biotechnology can apply for Maths and Science teachers in the State. They can now apply in secondary and higher secondary schools for the post of sikshan sahayaks. The authorities had earlier rejected the candidates as they were considered ineligible for the post.
However, Orissa Justice Biren Vaishnav accepted the contention on behalf of candidates who said that Biology is basic science and Biotechnology is advanced Biology. The justice agreed with the argument that B.Sc. Biology or M.Sc. Biology is not offered in any of the universities in Orissa.
The High Court agreed with the fact that the Biotechnology subject is the combination of biological, physical and chemical processes. It can be concluded that Biology is a branch of Science and Biotechnology is a branch of Biology. Biology is the study of living organisms and Biotechnology is the application of Biology for the benefit of mankind.
The High Court has asked the state authorities to offer an appointment to petitioners who have cleared the Aptitude and are meeting the eligibility criteria.

Petitioners’ Advocate S H Iyer in an address said that the sikshan sahayak post was released in the state in 2017 and the online application was accepted by the State Education Board who had an undergraduate and postgraduate degree in Biology/ Botany/ Chemistry/ Physics/Zoology/Maths. However, the biotechnology course was not considered and candidates were not eligible to apply and it was for this reason that the issue was brought up in the high court for the non-inclusion of Biotechnology candidates.
