The Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) will conduct class 10 board examinations in a new format from 2020. The students will have to attempt only descriptive type questions which will carry a total of 80 marks in the paper out of 100. The rest 20 marks will be the internal assessment marks of the schools. Also, the NCERT syllabus will be followed by the students from where the questions will come.

Recently, this notification has been circulated in the Gujarat Schools. The notification made it clear that there will be zero Optical Mark Recognition (OMR) sheet question papers. Rather, the students will have to answer all the questions in a descriptive manner. It also added that it is the job of the principals of each school to brief the students about the new pattern and clear their doubts regarding the same.

However, students who are in the repeating year will be following the old syllabus only will have to appear in the exam as per the new pattern.

The GSHSEB also previously changed the exam pattern of 12th board by deciding to do away with the OMR Sheets and MCQ type questions, but later revoked the decision facing protest by the parents of GSHSEB students.

An official in the DEO said that the change in the exam pattern will benefit the students. He added that it is the job of the principal of each school to inform the students about the new exam pattern.

The Director of CN Vidyalay, Mr Kirit Joshi said that the new pattern will also test a student’s understanding of the subjects rather than only descriptive abilities. He added that 64 marks in the question paper will be of descriptive type and the rest will be the short type questions. He said that he feels this is a better pattern than the previous one where there used to be MCQs in the OMR sheet for 50 marks and it will surely benefit the students.
