Gujarat HC: GujCET Score Valid for Admissions to Med Colleges for Management Quota Seats

The Gujarat High Court on Thursday, 22nd September upheld the decision of the state government to surrender 105 management quota seats in seven self-financed medical colleges under the Gujarat Medical Education Research Society (GMERS) and fill these seats through state's own common entrance test popularly known as Gujarat Common Entrance Test or GujCET.

Three students had approached the Gujarat High Court against the state Government's decision. They urged the court that instead of GujCET, the admissions to students should be given on the basis of National Eligibility Cum Entrance Test (NEET). The Division bench of Justice V M Pancholi and Chief Justice V Subhash Reddy upheld the state government’s decision. The state Government wants that 105 seats of management quota will be filled as per the result of GujCET.

Before that, the High Court had questioned Gujarat government’s last-minute change for converting self-financed colleges’ 105 management quota seats into government quota. The court also questioned the state government on changing the eligibility criteria when the admissions were under way.

The state of Gujarat should not have changed the process during the admissions, argued the petitioners while objecting the decision. The petitioners also said that the change in eligibility criteria was against the interest of the students appearing in NEET and who did well in the exams.
