Harry Potter, Tintin Books – A welcome change in ICSE Curriculum

The Council of Indian School Certificate Examination (CISCE) recently announced the new curriculum for schools affiliated to it. The board has introduced contemporary literature to its syllabus including popular comics such as Asterix and Tintin and world famous books including J K Rowling’s Harrry Potter series for reading sessions.

Students, parents as well as educationists, have approved this move. These new books will be included in the revised syllabus for Class III to Class VIII. Students have expressed their delight at the change in reading sessions from boring books to newer and more interesting books.

Rakshit Shah, an 11-year-old student shared his excitement for the new syllabus and said that even though he doesn’t mind reading stories by Tagore, they are not very interesting as the characters seem old. Rakshit prefers the adventure genre and is fond of Asterix comics and Harry Potter books and added that students will not feel as if they are studying while reading such books.

Parents have also shown enthusiasm for the new curriculum and are excited about the inclusion of comics and books. Jheel Khera, parent of a second standard student, said that she use to read Asterix and Tintin when she was a child and adding books like these to the syllabus will motivate children to read more often.

Principals of various schools have said that it is a welcome move to include popular books for additional reading. Rita Katawati, Principal of Hutchings School talked about the move and said that introducing books like Harry Potter and Tintin comics will make reading more fun for the students but it cannot replace Shakespeare, Tagore and Keats as they are essential for the curriculum.
