Acknowledging the various issues related to the quality of education in India, HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar spoke as Lok Sabha and accepted that brain drain is a serious issue. He also added that it is important to come up with effective solutions for the problem.

The minister informed that the government is working to attract more students towards the Indian set-up of education. Following are the steps being taken by the government to stop brain drain:

  • The top 500 students of India will be offered a scholarship worth Rs. 75,000 as part of the PM Scholarship Scheme.
  • The vacancies at various prestigious engineering colleges will also be dealt with and the ministry will ensure that all seats at NITs are filled through counselling.
  • Efforts are also being made to lift the quality of existing institutes and to lead them to the list of world class institutes.
  • Achieving good rankings in lists like QS top universities in the world and QS subject-wise listings is also the ministry’s agenda. This way students will feel encouraged to get a world-class education at Indian institutes.
  • Various exchange programmes have also been started by the ministry to rope in qualified faculty members from prominent international universities. Also, students will be given opportunities to study a semester at international universities for better exposure.
  • In 2017, over 600 students are expected to visit the country to participate in various academic programmes.
  • Research investment is also being made to come up with quality inventions to attract more students to take up research programmes.

These steps will be taken to enhance the quality of technical and science education in the country. Javadekar added that many of the technical institutes have been producing graduates who are not employable and lack elemental skills.
