493 Crore for Higher Education Dept in Kerala Budget

Rs. 493 crore has been earmarked for the higher education department in Kerala and the plan also includes creation of new 1000 teaching posts and new courses.

The Kerala state government has allocated Rs.493 crore for higher education out of which Rs.125 crore is for Kerala University, Kannur University, University of Calicut, Malayalam University, Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit and Kerala Law Academy and Mahatma Gandhi University. Rs.16 crore will also be given to the Higher Education Council and Rs.9 crore has been kept aside for the Kerala Council for Historical Research (KCHR). Rs. 50 crore will also be granted for Additional Skill Acquisition Programme (ASAP).

KR Narayan National Institute of Science and Arts will get Rs.5 crore according to the budget. From this fund, Rs.2 crore each will be kept aside for visual documentation in museums. To make sure that infrastructure on the campus is well-maintained, Rs.142 crore will be kept for construction of buildings in colleges. In March, more than 1000 new teaching posts are likely to be created in all the colleges and 60 new courses are also likely to be introduced.

These courses will be called new generation inter-disciplinary courses. It is also mandatory for colleges to have NAAC accreditation with A plus grade to apply for the new course. Relaxation will be given to the government colleges which are under the trust of Scheduled Caste. The Central Government allocated Rs. 99,300 crore for the education sector. In the previous year (2019) Union Budget, the government's allocation for the education sector was Rs 94,800 crore.
