IIT-Madras, DU, Three others get Institution of Eminence Status
The HRD Ministry has awarded the status of Institute of Eminence to the IIT-Madras, the IIT-Kharagpur, Delhi University, Benares Hindu University and the University of Hyderabad.
Human Resource Development Ministry has awarded the status of Institute of Eminence to the IIT-Madras, the IIT-Kharagpur, Delhi University, Benares Hindu University and the University of Hyderabad, as per the official statement.Though it was subjected to the respective state governments for granting the IoE tag to Jadavpur University, Kolkata and Anna University, Chennai.
Among the universities which could not make it to the cut this year despite their efforts are Aligarh Muslim University, Azim Premji University, Ashoka University, Punjab University, Tezpur University in Assam, Andhra University & Indian Institute of Public Health, Gandhinagar.
The decision of recommending the above-mentioned institutes taken at a meeting held by the University Grants Commission (UGC) where the Empowered Expert Committee (EEC) had produced their report on which the decision of giving the IoE tag to the institutes was considered by UGC.
Five Institutes Bag IoE Status
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved the names of some higher learning institutes for IoE (Institute of Eminence) status along with special incentives on September 04, 2019 The proposal is a part of HRD Ministry’s initiative to select 10 public and 10 private institutes for granting complete autonomy. The ten government institutes that will be selected for the IoE status will also receive special funding.
The institutes which got IoE status this year are,
- IIT Madras
- IIT Kharagpur
- Delhi University
- University of Hyderabad
- Jadavpur University (Kolkata)
- Anna University (Chennai)
- Banaras Hindu University (Varanasi)
- Shiv Nadar University (Uttar Pradesh)
- O.P. Jindal Global University (Haryana)
The institutes like IIT Delhi, IISc Bangalore, IIT Mumbai and the University of Calcutta has received the tag previously.
Letter of Intent Issued to Five Private Universities
UGC has issued a letter of intent to five private universities for sending their preparedness for being declared as IoE.
- Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology, Odisha
- Vellore Institute of Technology, Tamil Nadu
- Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi
- Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham (Tamil Nadu)
- Bharti of the Satya Bharti Foundation in Delhi

Earlier, the government allowed existing universities, new universities and private universities for the IoE status. Universities and colleges with better world rankings and NIRF (below 50 ranks) were eligible to apply for the IoE scheme. Top universities across the country applied to the scheme and the government constituted a committee to shortlist the names of 20 institutes for the IoE tag.
Institutes with IoE status will have a greater scope to hire international faculty, enrol international students, introduce new courses, initiate online courses etc. The government control and role will be the least in the functioning of these institutes. These institutes are also free to collaborate with international universities.
