Over the course of the last few years, the number of Telugu students going to Germany for higher studies from Hyderabad has seen a significant rise. Last year, around 17,570 students went to Germany for higher studies on a student visa. Among which, 500 student visas were issued to the Telugu speaking students. Engineering, Biotechnology, and medicine courses are among the top priority of students opting to study in Germany.

A seminar was held recently in Hyderabad by German cultural centre, Goethe-Zentrum regarding the benefits and prospects of studying in Germany. Special emphasis was put on engineering, technical and medical aspirants. The issues related to students' visa for aspirants who want to study in Germany was also discussed in the seminar. Students from various levels from 12th pass to Ph.D. appeared in the seminar.

Johannes Wenzel, who works with a Chennai based German academic exchange service in India informed that most German universities do not charge any tuition fees from anyone. The only expense the students have to bear is the living cost that comes around 700 to 800 euro per month which is around 55 to 62 thousand rupees in Indian Currency. The medium is English, and Germany allows students to take a part-time job for 120 days a year against a student visa.

Wenzel said that all the universities in Germany are autonomous. Every university in Germany has set their norms and criteria a student has to abide by. In some universities, the students are admitted as per merit or performance in previous academic life and some universities take entrance examinations for admissions in their various courses. The engineering colleges in Germany are divided into two sections. One is ‘technology’ and another is ‘applied technology.’

Students can face some glitches if they are aspiring for medical courses in Germany. The medical institutes in Germany demand at least 13 years of education and in some places, knowledge of German language is required.
