During the interaction with the visiting NAAC team to Himachal Pradesh, CM Virbhadra Singh called for a “merit-based” representation of student leaders in any educational institutions and also appealed to separate politics from varsities so as to avoid increasing violence by student organisations.

The CM said that politics has become a part of the universities of the country. Student elections are marred by violence and turbulence. Students' representation should be on the basis of merit and direct elections in institutions of higher education spoil the academic atmosphere.
A lot of mischief mongers enrol themselves in the campus spoiling the academic peace of the institute and violence in universities and colleges, pose a threat to the education system. It should be controlled by adopting necessary steps.

The CM also said that he was also a student of St. Stephens College (Delhi) but he never took part in student politics and they had their own student body elected on merit.
While talking about the role of the teachers in student politics he said they have no right and business to involve in student union elections.
The CM also informed that new land has been identified near Ghannahatti for setting up another campus of the university. The financial assistance for the university had been increased from Rs. 79 to Rs. 90 crores. New hostels, education blocks would be established there.
