Hindi Likely to be Made Compulsory till Class 10 in all CBSE Schools

Pranab Mukherjee gave “in-principal-approval” to a suggestion that was made by the parliamentary panel, which indicated that Hindi must be a compulsory language until Class 10. As per the President’s order, the Centre has to now hold consultations with various states before making Hindi a mandatory subject. The order of the President has been published on the official website of the department of official languages.
However, making Hindi a compulsory subject might not go well with all the states. Most of the state boards are formed based on linguistic lines. For instance, severe protests were witnessed in Tamil Nadu during the 1960s when Hindi was made as a national language by the central government.

The choice of language that is to be taught in schools varies from state to state. Earlier, Central Board of Secondary Education recommended a three-language formula where students are supposed to study English and any other two Indian languages until Class 10.
Almost all the schools in North India choose Hindi. Alternatively, other states can choose any language among the 22 official languages that are recognised by the Indian Constitution.
As of now, the Ministry of Human Resource and Development is yet to respond to the suggestion made by Central Board of Secondary Education regarding the three-language formula.

President of India turned down the recommendation that mandated minimum knowledge of Hindi to seek a government job. The committee that was constituted by the Parliament on official languages made 117 recommendations to encourage the use of Hindi. Most of the recommendations have been accepted by the President.
