The Jadavpur University has decided the recipient list of its Honourary Degrees of D.Litt and D.Sc after a heated court conversation between the faculties and the Governor of West Bengal Mr Jagdeep Dhankar. The court discussion took place on 18th October where the final list of JU Honorary degrees was decided. Mr. Dhakar had many objections on the list proposed by the JU faculty but they managed to keep the recipient’s list intact after the discussions.

The names of stalwart Bengali Poet Shankha Ghosh, ex-foreign minister Mr Salman Hayat was proposed to be honoured with the D.Litt and the D.Sc degree was proposed for Ms Sanghamitra Banerjee, Director of Indian Statistical Institute (ISI) and Scientist CNR Rao.

The names were already sent to the court by the executive council of JU as per the rules, still, Mr Dhankar said that he was not informed with the names before and there are many more eligible candidates to honour, the EC should have issued an advertisement. The court rejected both the claims of the governor-chancellor by saying that the notice was sent long before and there are no rule of issuing an advertisement.

After checking the bio-data of Mr Salman Hayat, the governor questioned if knowing Arabic is an acceptable quota? And also added that he has no idea who Sanghamitra Banerjee is. A faculty of international relations department of Jadavpur University, Mr Omprakash Mishra asked if one needs to check biodata if the names of Manmohan Singh or Abhijeet Banerjee were proposed!

The governor was unpleased with the attitude of the JU Court and said even if he accepts the proposal, this kind of audacity will not be tolerated again. The ex-VC of JU, Mr Siddharta Dutta expressed that the court has stood up to the democracy of the university which is very much appreciable. The Jadavpur University Teachers Association (JUTA) has however congratulated the JU Court members for staying firm to uphold the autonomous rights of the University.
