HRD Minister in Favour of Accreditation Status for IITs & IIMs
Central Government is planning to rope in IITs and IIMs as accreditation bodies - Union HRD Minister Prakash Javedkar.
To ease the burden of nodal accreditation body- National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), Central Government is planning to rope in IITs and IIMs as accreditation bodies, discloses Union Human Resources Development Minister Prakash Javedkar.
While talking on the overburden of NAAC, the minister said that right now we have only NAAC as an accreditation agency, whereas there are over 700 universities and 38,000 colleges in the country. On yearly basis 800 to 100 educational institutes are being assessed by NAAC.

The minister, while speaking at the function of Indira Group of Institute, said we are going to give Indian Institute of Managements (IIMs) and Indian Institute of Technologies (IITs) the status of accreditation bodies. There will be multiple choices in front of the institutes. The accreditation will be completed in limited time. As a result, we can go for more quality education.
On the question of global ranking, why Indian institutes losing out, the minister said, 40 percent importance is given to perception at the global level while ranking the institute. We have to fight a perception battle. There are two major rankings-Time and QS and in both the rankings, 40 percent weight age is given to perception. We are trying to improve the perception through the use of our alumni, Indian diasporas etc.

The minister further said that a good presentation is also needed for perception. We will ensure that quality of the institute is reflected in the minds of people who decides the ranks.
While talking to the brain drain issue, the Minister said that HRD ministry is emphasising on how to increase brain gain. I have asked IITs and IIMs to take part in these job fairs that take place worldwide and bring good talent from there.
