HRD Minister Prakash Javadekar Inaugurates IIM Trichy’s Permanent Campus

Prakash Javadekar, HRD Minister inaugurated the state-of-the-art permanent campus of Indian Institute of Management, Trichy through a video conference from Delhi on April 3, 2017. IIM Trichy was established on January 4, 2011. Since then, the institute has been functioning from a temporary campus, i.e., National Institute of Technology, Trichy campus. Now, the institute will start functioning from its permanent campus which is ready.

During the inaugural session of the permanent campus of IIM Trichy, Prakash Javadekar revealed that Indian Institutes of Management would soon get complete autonomy. The main objective of the government is to promote qualitative education. He clarified that the IIM Bill is expected to be cleared by the Parliament by next week. The institutes will have power to award masters degree instead of diploma if the Bill is passed.

He also indicated that Indian Institutes of Management could come up with five-year plans apart from academic and research plans.

The permanent campus has been built at a cost of Rs. 772 crore on a total built-up area of 175-acre land near a village called Chinna Suriyur. The permanent campus has all the world-class amenities and a hostel that can accommodate 400 students along with staff quarters and recreation club.

It took around 30 months to complete the construction of the permanent campus. Initially, the estimated cost for the construction was Rs. 333 crore. However, the estimated budget increased to Rs. 772 crore along with infrastructural improvements.
