HRD Minister: Research in Higher Studies Must for Sustainable Growth

Prakash Javadekar, Human Resource Development (HRD) Minister on Thursday, 4th May, laid stress on promoting research in higher education in India to ensure sustainable growth in the country.

While Mr. Javadekar spoke about poet Ramdhari Singh 'Dinkar' in a memorial lecture, he emphasised on encouraging research and innovation and highlighted the need to tackle brain drain. He also requested to improve the education quality from primary to higher education.

Noting the progress of India and China that is has attained over the last thirty years, he cited that it was due to the reverse engineering concepts. He added that for prosperity to flourish, sustainability and innovations are the only solutions.

The minister informed about the government's decision to set up “best research laboratories” in the central universities so that the great Indian minds are able to explore and innovate in India itself. He further added that the IITs will also interview the Indian students studying abroad so that they come back as faculty members. Consultancy and research freedom will also be given to deserving candidates apart from the INR 75,000 per month Prime Minister scholarship.

Javadekar emphasized on improving the quality of education imparted through schools too since they play the main role in the learning outcome process. He cited the importance of camps that are being conducted this month at five places in the cities of Pune, Guwahati, Chandigarh, Raipur and Bengaluru.

He also discussed the idea of the government to allow states to decide on detaining students after reviewing their performance in 5th and 8th class by modifying the Right to Education Act.
