HRD Minister Stresses on Utilitarian Education

While inaugurating girl students' 'Begum Hazarat Mahal Hostel at Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, Prakash Javadekar, Union HRD Minister stressed on the real education that respects for each other's culture and customs. He also emphasized on educating girl child.

The minister emphasized on the need to enhance research in various disciplines in India. The minister said that all religions teach non-violence, brotherhood, truth and compassion for others. The aim of education is to become good human beings and not just knowing about a few subjects.

While talking about women’s education, the HRD Minister said that it was a great loss to humanity that girls were not allowed to study for hundreds of years.

Referring to social reformers, like Savitribai Phule and Maharshi Karve, he said that they tried to work for women’s education and met with lots of hurdles but that did not stop them from pursuing the goals they wanted to achieve.

He also mentioned how the Modi government has paid special stress on education of girls through its Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao campaign.

While mentioning about Jammu and Kashmir, the minister said that Government has increased the supernumerary seats in technical colleges for students hailing from J&K from existing 2 to 10. Students have availed these scholarships enthusiastically despite the disturbances in the valley and strengthen the unity of India.

The HRD minister appreciated the works of Aligarh Muslim University, Banaras Hindu University (BHU) and Jamia during the British rule, as the British never focused on mass education. He also told about increasing the academia-industry collaboration in research and his ministry’s programs like Imprint, GIAN, Ucchattar Avishkar Yojana.

Talat Ahmad, Jamia Vice-Chancellor said that the university had started 15 courses, including Sanskrit and Yoga, in the last two years, and was focusing on world class interdisciplinary research.
