The Ministry of Human Resource and Development has revealed its plans to introduce a national-level exam for recruiting school teachers. According to the HRD Ministry, a national-level test on the lines of Common Admission Test (CAT) and Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) may become mandatory to clear in order to practice teaching.

As per the plan, NCTE will be given the responsibility of conducting the national-level exam for recruiting teachers. After the evaluation, teachers will be awarded ranks based on their performance in the written test. However, there will be no mandatory rule for the state governments to recruit teachers based on the rank in the national-level entrance exam. If necessary, state governments can hold a separate exam for recruiting the teachers.

HRD Ministry will hold discussions with the state governments and stakeholders regarding the national-level teacher recruitment exam. According to HRD Ministry, national-level teacher recruitment exam will bring more transparency in teacher training process.

Currently, NCTE is highly concerned with the irregularities in B.Ed, M.Ed and D.Ed colleges. Over 4,000 teacher-training colleges across the country failed to comply with the norms of NCTE. These colleges failed to submit mandatory data sought by NCTE. Some of the B.Ed colleges exist only on paper. Therefore, NCTE has decided to disaffiliate the colleges that fail to submit mandatory information in the form of an affidavit. NCTE will provide star rating to top performing B.Ed colleges. The idea is to improve the standards of teacher training.

Many B.Ed colleges across the country allow the students directly appear for the exams even if they do not attend the classes regularly. Some of the colleges do not conduct regular classes for students.
