HRD Ministry: No Plans to Open Satellite Campus of IIT, IIM or JNU

The HRD Ministry confirmed that it has no plans to come up with a satellite campus of the IIMs, IITs and JNU. Satyapal Singh, Union Minister of State for HRD, informed about the same during the Lok Sabha written question session.

He further informed that as a part of the policy the government does not encourage the establishment of satellite campuses of educational institutions such as IIMs, IITs and JNU.

However, there were speculations about a JNU satellite campus to be established. Jagadesh Kumar, JNU Vice-Chancellor made an announcement about the same during the month of October 2018. The aim of the university was to make the university accessible to more students by setting up a satellite campus. He proposed the respective idea earlier because a university could offer courses to a limited number of students, but by establishing a satellite campus a large number of students would have benefited. It would have provided access to education to a large number of students.

Jawaharlal Nehru University was established in the year 1966. It offers various postgraduate, certificate, diploma and doctoral programmes in the field of arts and humanities, management and others. Apart from these courses, JNU also offers integrated courses in foreign languages. The varsity follows a semester system and aims for the holistic development of the students. It not only focuses on academics but also motivates the students to participate in the extra-curricular activities for overall growth and personality development.
