HRD Ministry to Introduce Professional Skill Learning in Undergraduate Courses
HRD aims to introduce professional skill courses is to improve the employability of B.A., B.Sc and B.Com students. This initiative will be able to offer a new set of bachelor’s programme in Commerce, Science and Arts stream.
The Human Resource Development Ministry (MHRD) is planning to make professional skills/ subjects a part of courses such as B.Com and B.A. The main aim of this initiative is to develop the overall personality of the students and to help them improve their prospects of getting employment and relevant job opportunities in their respective field.
HRD Minister, Prakash Javadekar said that this initiative will be able to offer a new set of bachelor’s programme in Commerce, Science and Arts stream. It will offer 1,000 hours of additional courses on soft skills and information communication technology. He further said that the new programme is likely to be named B.Com (Professional), B.A. (Professional) and B.Sc (Professional).
Elaborating on the contents of the skill-based courses, Mr. Javadekar revealed there will be 250 hours of soft-skill sessions, personality development sessions and communication skills, 250 hours of digital information and communication technology and another 500 hours of skill development courses of the students choice.

The eligibility for these courses will require a candidate to have successfully passed 10+2 or equivalent examinations. The admissions will be based on the marks obtained by them.
Addressing the press, Javadekar said that the most of the students from B.A., B.Com, B.Sc background are unable to find a job as the general courses which they pursue do not train them for professional skills. With the addition of this, the employability of the graduates is expected to increase multifold.

Apart from this, the ministry will announce the National Education Policy (NEP) soon. The zero draft of the NEP is ready and the ministry will soon share it with the peer groups and give it a final shape to make it public thereafter.
