Amidst protests by students at National Institute of Technology (NIT-Uttarakhand), the Human Resource Development (HRD) ministry took a decision on 4th December 2018 to shift roughly six hundred students of the institute to NIT-Jaipur. The students from the first, second and third year of the current batch of engineering courses will shift to NIT Jaipur for the next three years. Having said that, the ministry has stated that the degree which will be awarded to the students will be from NIT-Uttarakhand only.

R Subrahmanyam, the Higher Education Secretary mentioned that 625 students from NIT-Uttarakhand will move to the satellite campus by the mid of December and will stay there till the programme ends. This however only applies to the students pursuing B.Tech programme at NIT Uttarakhand, who are in the first, second and third year of the programme. Students in B.Tech final year, students pursuing M.Tech and Ph.D. will have to stay back in Uttarakhand.

This decision follows students’ protests over NIT Uttarakhand’s temporary campus location. The students have been on an indefinite strike since October 4 and demand a change in the location of the institute after a student met with an accident. Neelam Meena, a third-year Electrical and Electronics Engineering student got hit by a car on NH-58. The students now want a ‘safer’ and ‘well-equipped’ campus and had threatened to bunk lectures till the campus is not shifted.

NIT-Uttrakhand is featured among the 10 new NITs established in 2009 and in 2010, the admissions began. But even after so many years and with a strength of approximately 980 students, the institute still functions from a 3.4-acre temporary plot.
