HRD Ministry to Consider ‘Institute of National Importance’ Status for NCERT
If this status is conferred to NCERT, the council can award degrees and start a range of courses on teaching.
The Union Human Resource Development Ministry is planning to take initiatives in regard to the demand made by National Council for Education Research and Traning (NCERT) to grant it a ‘Institute of National Importance’ status. If this status is conferred to NCERT, the council will be able to award degrees and could possibly start a range of courses on teaching.

Addressing at the 56th Foundation Day of NCERT, Hrushikesh Senapaty, Director of NCERT, said that the regional institutes are affiliated to different universities which create difficulties. He clearly pointed out that one of the regional institutes which come under NCERT could not implement the semester system because it was not in line with the norms of the University.

Mr. Senapathy also mentioned that the council had sent a request to HRD Ministry to grant 'Institute of National Importance' status so that it could confer degrees and start a wide range of courses.Mr. Kushwaha, State HRD Minister, assured that the ministry would look into the issue and take remedial steps.
Senapathy requested the government to set up a Regional Institute of Education in every state. He said that education in every state needs quality in teachers’ training.
He concluded that the NCERT is unable to innovate programmes as all the institutes are affiliated to universities.
Currently, the premier institutes in India like IITs and IISc have the status of national importance conferred by an Act of Parliament.
