HRD Ministry to Launch 32 DTH Channels for Live Lectures

“The government is focusing on using space technology to expand the reach of high quality education. Through the 32 DTH channels the aim is to ensure that live classrooms can be transmitted from ten ‘Teaching Ends’ out of which six will be IITs located in Chennai, Mumbai, Delhi, Kharagpur, Kanpur and Guwahati,” a senior official said.

Good news for students of India who have a passion for engineering. There must be students who wanted to attend IIT but couldn’t ,you know, it’s okay because now you will be able to attend those classes from your living room because government is working on a way to live telecast the lectures for students across India.

The live telecast will not only include IITs but also some other top institutes. The HRD ministry is working on this project in which they will launch 32 Direct-to-Home channels to provide students a more relaxed way to acquire education.

The Department of Space has agreed to allot two transponders on a GSAT series satellite for this project, while MoUs have been signed with many institutions which will provide lessons and content that will be telecasted on these channels.

The project will give the students access to education on a wide scale because with this project they can learn from India’s amazing educationalists than just their college faculty. The channels will be telecast on TV but the names are not finalised yet. According to sources, the Ministry is working to ensure that these channels are on air in a couple of months.

These channels will be available free of cost on Doordarshan’s FreeDish DTH platform and to avail this service the student will be required to get a Set Top Box.

According to sources in a meeting that took place last month, a high-level committee chaired by Director, IIT Gandhinagar, the committee worked out the finer details of operationalising the project and it has been recommended that the channels will be live by August this year i.e August 2016.
