Hyderabad Leaves Behind Kota in JEE Mains & JEE Advanced Preparation

It seems like Hyderabad is the new hotspot for engineering entrance examination preparation leaving behind Kota, Rajasthan. The city has been able to build a firm foundation to bring successful candidates to Indian Institutes of Technology or IITs through the Joint Entrance Examination, popularly called as JEE.

There is a large number of coaching centres that have recently come up in Hyderabad that are attracting students from all across the country to fulfill their dreams of grabbing a seat in the premier engineering institutes of the country.

In the early 90s, there were a total of about 3,000 students who had enrolled for engineering coaching in the city of Hyderabad. However, this year, there were about 1.2 lakh students who have taken up engineering coaching. Moreso, Hyderabad has a major share of students with fifty percent of top 10 rankers from the city. Additionally, in JEE Advanced 2016, sixty percent of the top 10 rankers were from Hyderabad.

Some more inputs and observations:

• Hyderabad has dominated the merit list ever since almost a decade now.
• There has been an increase in popularity among Andhra Pradesh students to take up JEE as their medium to top engineering institutes of the country.
• The coaching centres that have come up have also made it a point to cater to the increasing demands.
• In 2006, only 938 and 1,004 candidates from Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan respectively, made it to the Indian Institutes of Technology. However, in 2016, a decade later, the numbers increased to 3,734 from AP & Telangana and 1,610 from Rajasthan.
• Hyderabad mostly makes up for more than twenty percent candidates who grab a seat at the premier engineering colleges.
• Basic fundamentals and concepts of JEE are taught to students right from class 7 and also the daily routine of students is such that they indulge in intense studies.

On the other hand, many experts believe that strenuous study schedules do not also turn out to be positive and they are unable to perform well even if they grab a prestigious seat at any of the IITs. Alternatively, school curriculum should be such that coaching is not encouraged from young ages.
