IGNOU to Offer Certificate Courses on Skill Development to Odisha College Students
- Department of Higher Education, Odisha will soon launch short-term certificate courses on skill development in colleges.
- For this purpose, the state government will soon tie-up with IGNOU.
Higher Education Department of Odisha is planning to introduce short-term certificate courses on skill development for UG and PG students across the state. The department will introduce these courses in different colleges in Odisha. For this purpose, the state government will tie up with Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) for launching certificate courses on skill development.
IGNOU officials have already made a presentation on skill development courses to Higher Education Department, Odisha. The government has evinced interest to collaborate with IGNOU for this unique initiative. These skill development courses will be introduced as add-on courses to students at par with their regular course.

Assistant Regional Director of IGNOU Regional Centre – Bhubaneswar, Mr. SK Panigrahi revealed that the varsity would pay the teachers for teaching skill development courses. The varsity will provide course materials to teachers. Students who enrol in these courses will get study material. The classes will be organised on Sundays so that classes for regular courses are not disturbed, he added.
The certificate courses on skill development will last for six months and the varsity will charge Rs. 1,500 to Rs. 4,000 towards the enrolment of the course. SC and ST students can enrol in these courses free of cost.
The skill development courses will help students to obtain specific skills in different domains. The courses will also make students industry ready. IGNOU has been offering skill development courses in Rajasthan.

IGNOU offers close to 69 skill development courses of six-month duration. Some of such courses are bee-keeping, dairy farming, organic farming, rural management, beauty & wellness and NGO management. These courses will help students to settle in jobs or start an enterprise independently.
