IGNOU Introduces PG Certificate Course in Medical Management of CBRNE Disasters

The School of Health Sciences of Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has introduced a new post graduate certificate course in Medical Management of Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosive (CBRNE) disasters.

The varsity has joined hands with the Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (INMAS), Integrated Defence Staff (IDS) and Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) for the programme. The decision to incorporate this programme was taken in the 51st meeting of the IGNOU’s Academic Council Standing Committee. The duration of this course will be for six months, which will be started from January 2020 session.

In a release, the varsity said that the CBRNE disasters are not understood well and this results in a tough diagnosis and fewer tools for their management exist, including medical management. Specific skills and knowledge are significant for the medical management of CBRNE disasters, which is not included in the UG curriculum. India, in particular, is exposed to CBRNE attacks and to counter this, society and governments should introduce special provisions to tackle them.

The postgraduate certificate programme will be available through both distance and open learning for those who have an MBBS degree from any institute recognised by MCI. The medium of instruction for the programme will be English and the interested applicant should be an Indian citizen. The candidates need to download the application form from the common prospectus, fill it and submit the same at their respective IGNOU center for further processing. There is a certain registration fee that the candidate needs to pay after confirmation of his/her admission to the course.

This new programme will be offered at AIIMS Jodhpur, AIIMS Rishikesh, AIIMS Saket Nagar- Bhopal and Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences Punjagutta- Hyderabad. Admission to the programme can be done through the January and July cycle.
